Our book review this month is The Sovereignty of God by Arthur W. Pink. This book was recently given to those who attend the Tuesday morning BIble study, but I am confident a copy will find its way into the library. It is also worth mentioning that we are reading a book similar in subject to two previous reviews, Sinners in the Hands of a Good God and Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ.
Pink declares, “The sovereignty of God. What do we mean by this expression? We mean the supremacy of God, the kingship of God, the godhead of God. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that God is God. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Most High, doing according to His will in the army of heaven, among the inhabitants of the earth, so that none can stay His hand or say to Him, ‘What doest Thou?’ (Daniel 4:35). To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Almighty, the possessor of all power in heaven and earth, so that none can defeat His counsels, thwart His purposes, or resist His will (Psalm 115:3). To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is ‘the Governor among the nations’ ((Psalm 22:28), setting up kingdoms, overthrowing empires, and determining the course of dynasties as pleaseth Him best. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Only Potentate, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords (1 Timothy 6:15).”
From this, Pink goes on to teach, “The doctrine of God’s sovereignty as it is unfolded in the Scriptures affords an exalted view of the Divine perfections. It maintains the creatorial rights. Thou has created all things and for Thy pleasure they are and were created (Revelation 4:11). It also makes known the irreversibleness of His will, known unto God are all His works from the beginning of the world (Acts 15:18).
So,
Ye fearful saints fresh courage take
The clouds ye so much dread,
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings o’er your head.
-William Cowper (1731-1800)
