Prayer for our Government and Military

(This prayer was offered up to God at our 12-28-2008 worship service as we were privileged to have one of our own in the military home for a visit.)

Dear Lord, we humbly lay ourselves before You and thank You for Your goodness and kindness to us who are unworthy to even call ourselves slaves. Father in heaven, we come to You on this day, thankful that we live in a country where prayer is allowed without fear of persecution. We as believers do not need to have a day such as this because by Your Word we are to make every day a day of prayer, however we thank You for the opportunity to come to You corporately.

Lord, we are reminded in Your Holy Word, that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions. Father we ask of You, that those You have placed in power in our government heed to Your guidance and that You grant them wisdom and discernment, so they may rule in a godly fashion, ignoring the world and leading with the wisdom that You and Your Word imparts.

Father, we ask first that we be godly subjects to the convening authorities, that we submit ourselves to their rule as Your Word has directed. Remind us Lord, that Your Word tells us there is no authority except from God and those that exist have been instituted by You, and as Your children we are to be obedient to the leaders You have provided. We pray for our president and the executive branch of our government Lord, that he and our vice president are wise and accept Your counsel. We pray that their decisions are based on godly principles and that they exercise restraint where needed, and sword where required.

Lord, we lift our legislative and judicial branches to You, that You grant them discernment and wisdom as they draft, execute and enforce laws. We pray that they turn to Your Word and to You in prayer as they manage this country.

Lord we pray for our state, county and local officials. We ask that they set aside their worldly differences and focus on the task of leading and directing their constituents. Lord, we pray that they know the difference between right and wrong and make decisions based on biblical truth. We pray that they are men and women of God and hold fast to their faith, as You hold fast to them.

Father in heaven, we pray for the men and women of our Armed Forces, the soldiers, the sailors, the marines, the airmen and the coastguardsmen. We pray for the safety of those who are in combat, especially those brothers and sisters of the faith who are placing their lives in harm’s way to help others who are in the throws of tyranny and oppression. We pray for those who are believers who place their faith in trust in Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. We ask, Father, that they remain trusting in You, placing You and Your Word above all else. We pray Father, that those who believe remain good and faithful ambassadors no matter what the obstacles, and that You use them as instruments to give glory to Your kingdom.

Lord, we pray for those who serve us on the home front, the police and fire personnel who protect us from threats external and internal. Father, we pray for their protection that they remain safe as they perform their duties. We humbly ask, Father, that You will give them wisdom as they respond to calls of emergency, and knowledge and patience as they administer aide. Father we thank You for those who are servants to us, we give thanks that You have placed it upon their hearts to serve the greater good by placing themselves at risk.

Father, we give thanks to You, for Your wisdom, Your grace and Your mercy. We thank You for this country, our leaders, our defenders and our responders. Lord, we remember those who have come before us and thank You for their sacrifice, for the freedoms that we enjoy by Your blessing poured upon us. Lord, we thank You for our veterans and their families, and we thank You for our very own that now serve in uniform and ask for Your providence to protect and bless them in these tumultuous times.

Father, we are ever grateful for Your providence and mercy on us. We ask that You continue to bless the United States of America and thank You for allowing us to live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” It is in Your Son’s holiest name that we give thanks. AMEN
