This Week @ Elim: 5-23 thru 5-29-2009

On the Lord’s Day:

9:15 am — Sunday school classes for all ages: Classes for graded age groups meet to learn from the Scriptures. To see Sunday school classes, ages and meeting locations, click on the red “Ministries” button under the category “Pages” (to the right).

10:30 am — In preparation for corporate worship, begin praying now for God’s Word to be delivered in spirit and in truth during the morning worship service. We’ll continue in our study of the book of Jude, learning what it means to “contend for the faith.”

During the Week:

  • Tuesday: Our Ten-thirty Tuesdays Bible study will continue our study in the Gospel of Matthew. This study meets every Tuesday morning at 10:30.
  • Thursday: Our Thursday Night Toolkit Old Testament survey Bible study will study Ezra, meeting at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary.

Upcoming and Ongoing:

  • On Sunday, May 31st, we will honor our high school and college graduates with a special reception following the morning service.
  • Mark your calendar NOW for Elim’s Annual Church Picnic, immediately after the morning worship service on Sunday, June 7th! This will be held in the back field at Elim so you don’t have far to drive! Each family should bring a hot dish and a cold dish to share. Bring lawn chairs and be prepared for lots of games!

From the Pastor’s Recent Reading:

Jesus is the perfect example of a loving shepherd. He epitomizes everything that a spiritual leader should be. Peter called Him the “Chief Shepherd” (1 Peter 5:4). He is our great Rescuer, Leader, Guardian, Protector, and Comforter.

Church leaders are undershepherds who guard the flock under the Chief Shepherd’s watchful eye (Acts 20:28). Theirs is a full-time responsibility because they minister to people who, like sheep, often are vulnerable, defenseless, undiscerning, and prone to stray.

Shepherding the flock of God is an enormous task, but to faithful pastors it brings the rich reward of the unfading crown of glory, which will be awarded by the Chief Shepherd Himself at His appearing (1 Peter 5:4).

If your pastor is faithfully carrying out the duties required in his job title, remember to follow this admonition of Scripture: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.” (Hebrews 13:17)
