This Week @ Elim: 7-11 thru 7-17-2009

On the Lord’s Day:

9:15 am — Sunday school classes for all ages: Classes for graded age groups meet to learn from the Scriptures. To see Sunday school classes, ages and meeting locations, click on the red “Ministries” button under the category “Pages” (to the right).

10:30 am — After a brief hiatus, we’ll resume our study of the wonderful epistle of Jude. Jude defines for us what is means to be “ungodly.” And so we know what GODLINESS is!

In deference to the schedules of the men involved, the monthly meeting of the Council of Elders is being moved to immediately following the Worship Service on Sunday, July 12.

Also immediately after the morning service, our Senior Singles will enjoy a home-cooked meal together. If you haven’t already, please let the church office know you’ll be there… and be hungry!

New Elim Baptist Church directories are available on the back table in the sanctuary. Pick your up today!

During the Week:

  • Monday: Elim’s Softball team is schedule to play a doubleheader at 6:00 and 6:40 pm on Diamond #6 at Sportscore. Check the softball schedule online at www. racsoftball.com.
  • Tuesday: Our Ten-thirty Tuesdays study continues next week with a chronological view of the Old Testament. This week, we’ll look at Job, chapters 6-14. We meet at 10:30 am in the Fireside Room.
  • Thursday: In place of our Thursday Night Toolkit Bible study, our missionaries in Europe will be our guests for a fun ice cream social on Thursday, July 16th. This event will begin at 6:30 and is sure to be a blessing for all ages as we visit with these newlyweds, hear about their plans, and encourage them with our love and prayers.

Upcoming and Ongoing:

  • As Elim has the opportunity to serve those less fortunate in the name of Christ, we need to see some new faces volunteering to serve dinner and do light clean-up. Elim takes on this ministry once every other month, and our next opportunity is on Tuesday, July 21st at 5:45 pm. If you would like to hear firsthand about this blessing, please see Betty Cesar or contact the church office. You may sign up on the special sheet on the back table of the sanctuary.
  • The next men’s fellowship meets next Saturday, July 18th at 9:00 am. This study for men of all ages begins with a discussion of “Practical Religion” by J.C. Ryle. In asking for self-examination of our Christian practices, Ryles states: We live in an age of special spiritual danger. When we look around us, we may well ask, “How do we do about our souls?”/li>
  • More volunteers are needed for on our own in-house mission field—Children’s Church! These little ones need to hear about God’s love and salvation. Won’t you tell them by being part of our rotation of volunteers? See the church office for details.

From the Pastor’s Recent Reading:

God reminds every one of us of ‘what we might have been but for his distinguishing grace. Judas sells Christ, and his only reward is a halter to hang himself with. Why might not I have been Judas? Ananias dies with a lie in his throat: why might not I have been that unhappy man? Ask that question, Christian; is there any betterness in your heart beyond the heart of Judas? Are you better than Ananias by nature? Is there any goodness in your constitution which would have kept you from their sin had you been left as they were? Judas was an apostle, mark you, a preacher, a miracle-worker; he dipped his hand with Jesus in the dish, and yet he sold him; and why not you? Let not self-righteousness whisper, “Ah I never should have done so. ” How knowest thou that? Simon Peter said he never would forsake his Master, but before long, with cursing and oaths, he had denied him. “Let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed lest he fall. ” What another man has done I may do; and there are no depths of wickedness into which I might not have plunged had not preventing grace stayed my course. —from SPOTS IN OUR FEASTS OF CHARITY by C.
