This Week @ Elim: 8-1- thru 8-7-2010

On the Lord’s Day:

  • 9:15 am — This Sunday only! Introduction to our visiting missionaries for all Sunday school classes elementary school age and up. This combined class will meet in the (air-conditioned!) sanctuary. All other Sundays: Sunday school classes for all ages: Classes for graded age groups meet to learn from the Scriptures. To see Sunday school classes, ages and meeting locations, click on the red “Ministries” button under the category “Pages” (to the right).
  • 10:30 am — We take a break from our verse-by-verse study of Acts 13 this week for a Communion Meditation from John 10:1-6. If you have missed any messages recently, please contact the church office if you would like a CD copy. Also, sermons are available for play or download under the “Sermon” category on the right side of the page.
  • We’ll have our annual Church Potluck Picnic to welcome our visiting missionary family. The “potluck” part will take place downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. Each family is asked to bring a hot dish and a cold dish to share. Then we’ll move outdoors (weather permitting) for games! Make sure to be here; it’ll be a ball! (Kick-ball, that is!)

During the Week

  • Monday: League Softball: 6:40 pm on Diamond #3.
  • Midweek Bible Studies are on hiatus until September.
  • Friday, (8/6) Biblical Astronomy Night, 8:30 pm: A scientist will lead us to explore the Bible’s accuracy in Creation as we look at the stars and planets that our awesome God has made.
  • Saturday (8/7), Monthly Prayer Breakfast at 9:00 am. This month, we’re meeting earlier in the month than usual to share in prayer for our missionary family. Ordinarily, our monthly Prayer Breakfast is held the third Saturday of each month.

Upcoming and Ongoing:

  • Elim’s sound and video capabilities are being improved and enhanced! There will be some noticeable changes in the next couple of week. But to facilitate those changes, we’ll need to close off the Elim Library for a bit. Please bring library books back to the church office until further notice.
  • Our over-60’s group, the Encouragers, and our youth will be hosting a special luncheon on Monday, August 9th at Noon. If you are planing on attending that luncheon and have not yet RSVP’ed, please contact the church office by Wednesday, August 4th.
  • If you are interested in bowling with Elim’s Fall Bowling League, please contact the church office.
  • On Friday, August 13th, we have to say, “Au revoir” to our visiting missionaries. But let’s do it with FOOD! Each family is asked to bring a salad-type dish or a platter of sandwiches to share. Beverages and special desserts will be provided. But please join us as we meet one last time to bid them a hearty “Farewell.”
  • Are you ready for Awana? Our Awana program will kick off on Wednesday, September 15th. It’s not too late to get involved in this exciting evangelism and discipleship activity for kids of all ages. See the church office for more information.

From the Pastor’s Recent Reading:

(While studying Isaiah 56:3-8) “Unbelief often suggests things to discourage believers, against which God has expressly guarded. Spiritual blessings are unspeakably better than having sons and daughters; for children are a care, and may prove a grief and shame, but the blessings we partake of in God’s house, are comforts which cannot be made bitter. Those who love the Lord truly, will serve him faithfully, and then his commandments are not grievous. Three things are promised. Assistance: I will not only bid them welcome, but incline them to come. Acceptance, and comfort: though they came mourning to the house of prayer, they shall go away rejoicing. They shall find ease by casting their cares and burdens upon God. Many a sorrowful spirit has been made joyful in the house of prayer. The Gentiles shall be one body with the Jews, that, as Christ says,( John 10:16) there may be one fold and one Shepherd. Thanks be to God that none are separated from him except by wilful sin and unbelief; and if we come to him, we shall be accepted through the sacrifice of our great High Priest.” — Matthew Henry
