***Friday, August 13th, we have to say, “Au revoir” to our visiting misisonaries. But let’s do it with FOOD! Each family is asked to bring a salad-type dish or a platter of sandwiches to share. Beverages and special desserts will be provided for this event at 6:30 pm. But please join us as we meet one last time to bid them a hearty “Farewell.”
On the Lord’s Day:
- 9:15 am — Sunday school classes for all ages: Classes for graded age groups meet to learn from the Scriptures. To see Sunday school classes, ages and meeting locations, click on the red “Ministries” button under the category “Pages” (to the right).
- 10:30 am — We resume our verse-by-verse study of Acts 13-28 this week. If you have missed any messages recently, please contact the church office if you would like a CD copy. Also, sermons are available for play or download under the “Sermon” category on the right side of the page.
- The Elim Council of Elders will meet briefly after the morning worship service.
During the Week
- Monday: League Softball: We’re in the Playoffs! 6:00 pm @ Wantz Park (600 Clifford Ave.; 1 block E. of Riverside & N. 2nd St.)
Upcoming and Ongoing:
- Elim’s sound and video capabilities are being improved and enhanced! There will be some noticeable changes in the next couple of week. But to facilitate those changes, we’ll need to close off the Elim Library for a bit. Please bring library books back to the church office until further notice.
- On Sunday, August 29th, you have the opportunity to be obedient to the commands of our Savior in believer’s baptism. Please see the pastor or an elder if this is a necessary step in your being a disciple of Jesus Christ.
- If you are interested in bowling with Elim’s Fall Bowling League, please contact the church office.
- It is our goal to produce a new Elim photo directory this fall. Lots of pictures have already been “snapped” but you may be asked to pose for a shot or two in the next few days. Please say, “Yes!” It helps us all to know (and pray for) each other better when we can connect a face to a name.We are asking that EACH FAMILY fill out the form enclosed in this bulletin and put it in the offering plate, give it to an usher, or send it to the church office.
- Are you ready for Awana? Our Awana program will kick off on Wednesday, September 15th. It’s not too late to get involved in this exciting evangelism and discipleship activity for kids of all ages. See the church office for more information.
- Beginning September 7th, there will be a 5-week course in the doctrines of Roman Catholicism each week at 10:30 am on Tuesday morning, and again with the same material at 6:30 pm on Thursday evening. We’ll examine the origins and the modern-day ramifications of papal authority, salvation (including Purgatory), worship of Mary and the Catholic Mass.
From the Pastor’s Recent Reading:
“Romans 1 is a pivotal text for many reasons, not the least of which is the description that it provides of those who suppress the knowledge of God. The text depicts these individuals as those who “changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves…” (Rom. 1:23-24). Suppression of the truth manifests itself in two ways, first in the desire to eradicate any residual reminders of the Creator/creature distinction and second, in a reconstruction of an alternative worldview to replace that which was jettisoned.
The first step, eradication of the Creator/creature distinction, is clearly seen as unbelievers attempt to undermine marriage (thus erasing the reminder of the relationship of Christ and the church), as they justify sexual deviancy (thus erasing distinctions in the sexes in an attempt to blur lines that suggest biblical distinctions in the sexes) and as they embrace moral and logical relativism (thus erasing distinctions between right and wrong and contradictory propositions).”
